Brief History of the Department :
The Department of Economics is one of the few old and big faculties in Sri Krishnadevaraya University. Started in 1972, the department has been expanding its teaching, research and extension activities over the last three decades. In fact, this department is one of the earliest faculties of teaching economics in Andhra Pradesh State to formulate and offer a course structure including the compulsory papers in Mathematical Economics and Economic Statistics, the necessary areas that help enhancing the understanding and utility of economic theory at the Post Graduate level. Further, the teaching programme of the department is expanded with the starting of Applied Economics Course from the academic year 1990-91. Apart from its teaching work, the department has been turning out impressive research out put and the functioning of centre for Rayalaseema Development Studies from 1987-88 added new dimension to research work by coordinating the studies relating to the issues of regional importance.

    Activities

    The members of the faculty and the students are actively involved in the extension work. Many staff members served as NSS Programme Officers and almost all the students take up social work every year. Teams of students under the leadership of teachers conducted socio-economic surveys on the impact of developmental schemes executed for the welfare of weaker sections.
    The department is involved in the Janma Bhoomi Programme implemented by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. The department discharged the duty of collecting socio-economic data and information needed by the Government of Andhra Pradesh for repairing micro level plans Besides, students and teachers participated in ‘Sramadan’ works executed in the rural areas. One of the staff members awarded the “Best Team Leader Award “ in the Janma Bhoomi Programme of Andhra Pradesh.
    The centre for Rayalaseema Development Studies initiated steps to study the socio-economic characteristics of Rayalasemma Region. For this purpose, the centre organized 2 national seminars and generated information on the problems of Rayalaseema. Further, the centre collected the information and data used by the research scholars in their Ph.D. and M.Phil works. In other words, the centre secured 85 M.Phil works. In other words, the centre secured 85 M.Phil and Ph.D. theses related to the problems of Anantapur and Kurnool districts. Attempts are also made to study the multi-dimensional aspects of regional economy by involving experts from sociology, politics, history, Rural Development, Commerce, Geography disciplines.
